Venezuela Seeks Return of €4 Billion in Gold from Bank of England
Venezuela's government and opposition have agreed to jointly seek the return of 31 tonnes of gold worth €4 billion from the Bank of England, following two weeks of US-brokered talks. The move is aimed at funding reconstruction efforts after June's devastating earthquakes.
The gold has been held by the Bank of England since 2018, and its value is estimated to be around €4 billion. The joint request comes as a result of negotiations facilitated by the United States, which have led to a tentative agreement between the government and opposition.
The return of the gold could provide much-needed funding for Venezuela's reconstruction efforts, but it remains unclear how long the process will take or what other steps are required to secure its release.
