Venezuela's $4 Billion Gold Reserve Heads for US Relocation
Venezuela's government and opposition are nearing an agreement to transfer approximately $4 billion in gold reserves from London to New York, according to reports. The proposed deal would see the gold moved from the Bank of England's vaults to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The gold reserves have been frozen at the Bank of England since 2019 amid government legitimacy disputes. Approximately 31 metric tons of Venezuelan gold remain entangled in British legal proceedings, with the UK aligning itself with opposition forces led by Juan Guaido.
Under the proposed terms, Acting President Delcy Rodriguez would gain legal control over the gold reserves but could not immediately sell them. Instead, the gold would function as collateral for securing governmental financing, potentially providing funds for reconstruction initiatives following the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June.
