Vice President Vance's Dollar Dilemma Sparks Controversy Over Reserve Currency Status
Economic historian Phillip Magness recently shared two clips of Vice President JD Vance criticizing the US dollar's status as global reserve currency. In the first clip, Vance is heard saying that he's 'not sure' it's 'actually good' that dozens of foreign central banks store their reserves in dollars, calling this a 'resource curse' like 'coal in Appalachia.' He added that this allows consumers to consume very cheaply.
Magness shared the clips on X, where they quickly went viral. Vance's allies sensed a growing campaign by free-market Republicans to discredit his economic policies ahead of a potential 2028 presidential bid.
A self-described 'critic' of Vance on trade, Magness is something of a libertarian gadfly among MAGA economists. He noted that the clips laid out some of the contours for conflicts that will emerge in the Trump administration over right-of-center economic policy and thinking.
