Vietnam-Canada Relations to Deepen with Historic Visit
Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam, Jim Nickel, is looking forward to the upcoming visit of General Secretary and President Tô Lâm. This historic visit marks the first time a Vietnamese leader has visited Canada.
The Comprehensive Partnership between Canada and Vietnam has been fruitful since its establishment in 2017, with cooperation in areas such as diplomacy, trade and investment, defense and security, cultural-academic exchanges, science and technology, and innovation.
Nickel believes that the visit provides an opportunity to deepen cooperation in all these areas, citing growth in bilateral trade, which has doubled over the past five years. In 2024-2025, two-way trade grew from $15.7 billion Canadian dollars to $20.6 billion Canadian dollars.
Agriculture, food security, and energy are identified as key sectors for further cooperation. Canada is an energy superpower with conventional and renewable energy technologies, while Vietnam requires a significant amount of energy for its rapid growth.
Nickel also sees potential in the aerospace and aviation sector, where Vietnamese aviation is growing rapidly, and innovation and technology areas such as communications technologies, satellites, and artificial intelligence.
