Wall Street Holds Steady Ahead of Fed Rate Hike Decision
Wall Street is holding steady ahead of the Federal Reserve's decision to hike interest rates. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% and was on track for its second gain in eight days, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 26 points or 0.1%. The Nasdaq composite increased by 0.7%.
The easing of oil prices and bond yields contributed to the stabilization of stocks. Brent crude fell 3.1% to $105.39, down from nearly $110 earlier in the week due to concerns about the global flow of oil. Meanwhile, the yield on the 10-year Treasury decreased to 4.96%, down from 5.00% late Tuesday.
The pressure remains high despite these easing trends. Brent oil is still above its pre-war price of $72, while the 10-year yield has risen from 3.97%. The Fed's decision to hike interest rates is seen as a certainty by Wall Street, which aims to combat inflation by making borrowing more expensive and slowing the overall economy.
The European Central Bank hiked rates last week to address global inflation concerns. Traders are still betting on a slight chance that the Fed may hold off on raising rates, which could lead to market uncertainty if it does so. The Fed will also release forecasts for interest rates in upcoming years, providing another opportunity for investors to gauge their expectations.
