Wall Street Institutions Overwhelmingly Call for Rate Hike as Fed Prepares to Act

The Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates is imminent, with Wall Street institutions overwhelmingly calling for at least a 50-basis-point hike in 2026. According to data aggregated by The Wall Street Journal and published on X (formerly Twitter), only four of the 20 institutions surveyed do not expect a rate increase this year. A staggering 70% of those that do anticipate a rise are forecasting a 50- or 75-basis-point increase.

This shift in expectations comes after the release of the August inflation report, which has led to a decisive change in thinking among economists and Wall Street analysts. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech on August 28 also contributed to the growing consensus that a rate hike is necessary to combat entrenched inflation.

The looming rate increase has drawn criticism from President Donald Trump, who has advocated for lower interest rates since his second term began. However, with modest levels of inflation being normal for a growing economy, the FOMC may have little choice but to act if they want to deliver price stability.
