Wall Street Tumbles Ahead of Fed Rate Decision
US stocks fell on Tuesday ahead of the highly anticipated Federal Reserve interest rate decision on Wednesday. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) closed down by 0.6%, while the S&P 500 lost 0.4% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite finished at -0.7%. Consumer discretionary was the worst-performing sector, led lower by a slump in shares of various companies.
The energy sector bucked the trend, however, with oil prices rising as investors await the FOMC's rate decision on September 16. Market consensus suggests that officials will raise short-term borrowing costs for the first time since July 2023, with a 25-basis-point hike expected by many analysts.
Andrew Hecht of Seeking Alpha stated that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is driving inflation higher and that the Federal Reserve has 'little choice but to hike rates on Wednesday.' This sentiment was echoed by Carol Schleif of BMO Wealth Management, who noted that the bond market has been signaling for weeks that higher rates are warranted due to warm inflation data, strong earnings, and a sturdy labor market.
