Waller Signals Support for Rate Hold in September If Inflation Continues Downward Trajectory
Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled on Tuesday that he would support maintaining the current federal funds rate target at the upcoming September meeting if inflation continues its downward trajectory.
Waller pointed to encouraging three-month core inflation figures, which have declined significantly from 4.76% in February to 3.05% through July, as a reason for holding interest rates steady.
The governor emphasized that policy remains data-conditional and warned that a hot August inflation report could put a rate hike back on the table.
