Warsh Clarifies Fed's Inflation Stance Amid Elevated Treasury Yields
The Federal Reserve's new Chairman, Kevin Warsh, faced market criticism in July after suggesting that rising yields on Treasury bonds were helping to combat inflation.
However, at a recent gathering of Fed officials in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Warsh provided clearer guidance on the central bank's commitment to fighting inflation.
The Fed's efforts are being tested by elevated long-term Treasury yields, which have remained above 4.7% for the 10-year bond and over 5% for the 30-year bond since July.
This has led to higher interest costs for the U.S. government and increased borrowing costs for consumers, with interest on the debt now ranking as the third-largest item in the federal budget behind only Social Security and Medicare.
