Warsh Defies Trump Again as Fed Raises Interest Rates Amid Inflation Concerns
The Federal Reserve Committee recently voted to raise interest rates by a quarter point, despite President Donald Trump's repeated requests for cuts. This decision marked a defiance of Trump's wishes and has sparked speculation about potential future rate hikes.
Warsh and the FOMC raised rates at their September meeting, which was met with displeasure from Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump tweeted that interest rates in the US should be 1%, or less, due to the country's strong credit rating.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has now gone against the president's wishes twice, and some analysts believe he may do so again if necessary. CME Group's FedWatch tool indicates a nearly 58% chance of another rate hike at the FOMC's October meeting, with over a 90% chance that rates will increase by at least a quarter point by December.
Warsh emphasized the need for clear and meaningful progress in reducing inflation back down to the 2% target during his post-meeting press conference. He stated, 'We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective clearly and at sufficient speed.' This suggests that Warsh may be willing to defy Trump again if needed.
