Warsh Ditches Forward-Looking Guidance, Hands Inflation Fight to Bond Market

Kevin Warsh, the new Chair of the Federal Reserve, has been making significant changes at the central bank since his swearing-in ceremony in May. One notable change is the elimination of forward-looking guidance in FOMC statements, a staple of monetary policy transparency for over two decades.

During his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee in April, Warsh criticized the Fed's bloated balance sheet and expressed a desire to deleverage it. He also argued that policymakers should change how they think about inflation.

Warsh has since launched five independent task forces to help the FOMC improve its monetary policy oversight and let the bond market dictate the path forward in fighting inflation. In his own words, 'Letting buyers and sellers meet at prices for Treasuries' is the message from markets, which he believes should be the guide for the Fed's remit.

While some have pushed back against the lack of transparency, Warsh remains committed to his wait-and-see approach to inflation. The rapid rise in yields at the long end of the yield curve has increased borrowing costs and done some of the legwork for the central bank in fighting inflation.
