Warsh Emphasizes Inflation Fight as Fed Raises Rates
Kevin Warsh, the newly appointed Federal Reserve chair, has made it clear that inflation is his top priority. In a recent decision to raise interest rates, Warsh emphasized that the economy remains strong and unemployment is low, but inflation needs to be brought back down to its 2% target.
Warsh acknowledged that higher borrowing costs will have an impact on households, particularly those facing higher mortgage rates, gas prices, and grocery bills. However, he argued that people without financial assets have the most to gain from stable prices and real wage growth.
The rate hike was a unanimous decision among Fed governors, who pointed to solid economic growth, low unemployment, and inflation above target as justification. Despite President Trump's repeated calls for lower interest rates, the decision was praised in some quarters as a sign of the Fed's independence.
