Warsh Faces Skeptical Investors in Jackson Hole Address
Kevin Warsh's appointment as Federal Reserve chairman has been met with skepticism by investors, and his speech at the central bank's annual Jackson Hole conference is expected to shed light on his approach to monetary policy.
Warsh has commissioned five task forces of experts to provide advice, but their reports are not yet available, leaving him unable to provide a clear account of his preferred approach. In the meantime, he can try to alleviate investors' concerns by acknowledging them and reaffirming the Fed's commitment to low inflation.
The new chairman's job has been harder than necessary due to circumstances surrounding his appointment, including pressure from the White House to cut interest rates despite rising inflation. Additionally, fiscal excess and the administration's policies have continued to put upward pressure on prices.
Warsh needs to make clear that the Fed will not cut its policy rate until the economy allows it, and he must provide a clear understanding of the factors guiding the Fed's decisions. His July press conference was criticized for his refusal to explain why the Fed chose to leave its policy rate unchanged.
