Warsh Navigates Divided Fed Board on Interest Rates
Warsh faces his most challenging meeting as Federal Reserve chairman, where he must navigate a divided Fed board over interest rates. Investors are uncertain about what to expect, with implied odds of a rate pause at 62% and a hike at 38%, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool.
Dennis Lockhart, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, believes there is a case for hiking interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point to a range of 3.75% to 4%. However, he predicts the Fed board will hold rates steady after its two-day meeting in Washington.
Ryan Young, senior economist at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, points to the continued uncertainty with Iran and the Trump administration's recent tariffs as key factors behind the shift in investor sentiment. He also notes that long-term debt interest rates have been creeping up due to people losing faith in the government's long-term finances.
Warsh has reiterated his commitment to bringing down inflation, which remains too high at 3.5% on the year ending in June. The Fed generally doesn't like to spook markets, and indications of a rate change usually end up being messaged by Fed members ahead of the meeting or in leaks to the media.
