Warsh Pushes for Federal Reserve Reforms Amid Growing Dissent
Kevin Walsh, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, is advocating for a reevaluation of the central bank's strategy and tools. At its recent meeting, the FOMC held interest rates constant in a 9-3 vote, but prior to the decision, there were rumblings of discontent among members.
Warsh has argued that the Fed should have a long-term strategy that is not altered by short-run economic fluctuations, and that forward guidance can lead to a 'lock-in effect' where it becomes difficult to change course. He also criticizes the use of FRB/US, a dynamic model used by the Fed for decades, as it may contribute to groupthink among FOMC members.
Warsh suggests reconsidering the Fed's tools, including its large balance sheet, which has grown from less than $900 billion in 2007 to almost $9 trillion in 2022. He argues that this gives the Fed an outsized footprint in financial markets and distorts market prices.
