Warsh Seeks Quieter Fed as BoE Transparency Offers Clues
Kevin Warsh, a former member of the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors, has expressed his desire for a quieter Fed. In contrast to his past views on forward guidance, he now seems to be moving towards a more transparent approach.
The Bank of England is cited as an example of how transparency can work in practice. Governor Andrew Bailey does not favor explicit signals about the next move in rates and tends to avoid running commentary on the economy.
However, the BoE is very transparent about what data it watches and how it reacts to events. This approach may be the one that Warsh ultimately follows as Fed chair. Some of his colleagues are already taking this path, such as Fed Governor Chris Waller, who recently offered a detailed account of what he's watching.
The September Fed decision is likely to hinge on the next couple of inflation releases and next week's jobs data. With a 2 in 3 chance of a 25bp rate hike being priced at the beginning of the week for the September FOMC meeting, investors will be closely watching these key releases.
