Warsh Shifts Focus: 'Shocks' Take Center Stage as Inflation Fears Grow

The Federal Reserve has undergone significant changes in its monetary policy approach under the leadership of new Chairman Kevin Warsh. Since his appointment on May 22, Warsh has been making waves with his remarks, particularly during the July 29 FOMC meeting.

In a departure from traditional thinking, Warsh repeatedly used the word 'shocks' to describe inflationary pressures, emphasizing that these are no longer short-lived but have become sticky sources of inflation. He used this term a total of 10 times in his prepared remarks and responses to reporters.

The FOMC members left interest rates steady at the meeting, but three dissented in favor of a quarter-point rate hike - the first time since September 2016 that three dissents occurred in the same policy direction. This represents the biggest central bank divide this early into a new Fed chair's tenure since 1970.

Warsh's use of 'shocks' suggests that policymakers are increasingly likely to raise interest rates to combat inflation, which has been above the Fed's long-term target of 2% for 64 consecutive months. The sizable increase in long-dated Treasury bond yields also hints at future rate hikes.
