Kevin Warsh, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, marked his 100th day in office with a keynote address at Jackson Hole that departed from traditional central bank speeches. Instead of offering forward guidance on interest rates, Warsh outlined the data dashboard he's watching and why.

The 'trail map' for monetary policy is built on seven principles, including a hard commitment to a 2% inflation target and a preference for short-term interest rates as the Fed's primary tool. Currently, PCE inflation, the Fed's preferred price gauge, is running at 3.7% year-over-year, with an annualized rate of 4.1% over the past six months.

Warsh emphasized that real-time economic indicators are more important than traditional monthly data releases, which often arrive weeks or months after the fact. He noted that current financial conditions show 'few signs of policy restraint' despite elevated inflation, suggesting room for tighter policy if the data warrants it.
