Warsh's Press Conference Discrepancy Exposed in July FOMC Minutes
The July Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes revealed an unusual discrepancy between Chair Kevin Warsh's explanation of the decision to hold interest rates unchanged and the Committee's official record.
Warsh, who called for 'regime change' at the Fed, seemed to break a precedent set in 2011 when he failed to accurately explain the Committee's current decision or its thinking about economic developments during his press conference.
The FOMC minutes showed that most officials believed inflation would step down over the rest of the year as energy supply disruptions and tariffs waned, supported by soft inflation data in June. They held rates unchanged to gather more information before their September meeting, with some officials favoring a hike if inflation didn't decline.
Warsh's press conference was criticized for downplaying the importance of the cool June CPI print, saying 'not much' and that the Committee wasn't relying on any one individual piece of data. However, the minutes revealed that the Committee did indeed consider the June data in their decision-making process.
