Warsh's Rate Hike Test: Will Fed Chief Deliver on Inflation Fight

The US Federal Reserve is set to hold its key rate-setting meeting this week, with markets expecting policymakers to raise interest rates to combat high inflation.

Persistent inflation has been a concern for the world's largest economy, exacerbated by factors such as President Donald Trump's trade policies and the ongoing AI boom. The Fed has held rates steady since January, but several policymakers have hinted at a rate hike if inflation does not show signs of slowing down.

New data on consumer inflation for August showed it remaining steady at 3.4 percent, still above the Fed's two percent target. Market expectations of a 25-basis-point rate hike surged to over 85 percent after the release of this data.

The decision is seen as a test for Federal Reserve chief Kevin Warsh, who was appointed by Trump and has advocated for less transparency into the Fed's decision-making process. Analysts say that raising rates would increase borrowing costs across the board, but could also establish Warsh's credibility as an independent Fed chair.
