Warsh's Silence Sparks 66.4% Rate Hike Bets After Jackson Hole Speech
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's decision to abandon forward guidance at the Jackson Hole symposium has sent market expectations for a September interest rate hike soaring. The probability of a hike rose from roughly 36% before his address to 66.4% on Tuesday, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool.
Economist Justin Wolfers questioned whether Warsh operates as an independent central banker or a political instrument, framing the debate as a choice between 'hawky hawk Kevin' and 'MAGA Kevin.' Wolfers argued that Warsh's refusal to provide future rate guidance obscures the central bank's true policy motives.
The market reaction underscores the volatility inherent in Warsh's new communication strategy. The two-year Treasury yield rose about 8 basis points on Friday to its highest since late July, while gold fell 1.4% to $4,418.80 an ounce.
