Weakening Yen and Tokyo Rally Boost Japanese Rubber Futures

Japanese rubber futures continued their upward trend for a third consecutive session on Friday, driven by a weakening yen and a rally in Tokyo equities. The Osaka Exchange's (OSE) February-delivery contract rose by 2.3 yen or 0.54% to 430.2 yen ($2.74) per kilogram. Despite this gain, the contract still posted a weekly decline of 0.19%. In contrast, the Shanghai Futures Exchange's (SHFE) January-delivery rubber contract fell by 250 yuan or 1.32% to 18,670 yuan ($2,787.86) per metric ton.

The decline in oil prices also weighed on rubber futures, with oil falling 2% on Friday. Natural rubber often competes with synthetic rubber for market share, and its price is influenced by the price of crude oil. The October butadiene rubber contract on the SHFE lost 320 yuan or 2.14% to 14,645 yuan per metric ton.

The yen's decline against major currencies made yen-denominated assets more attractive to overseas buyers, contributing to a rally in the Nikkei index, which surged by 1.7% to 65,221.53, topping the psychological 65,000 mark for the first time in over a week.

Analysts from Guangzhou Futures noted that Thai latex and cup lump prices have been relatively strong recently due to low inventories at upstream processing plants and a willingness to restock, providing cost support for natural rubber.
