Welsh Conservatives Demand Council Tax Cap Amid Rising Inflation
The Welsh Government has been urged to introduce a cap on council tax increases and require local referendums for any proposed hikes above this limit. The call comes from the Welsh Conservatives, who argue that household budgets are under pressure from rising inflation and energy bills.
According to the latest figures, UK inflation rose to 3.1% in the year to August, up from 2.9% in July. This increase has added to the strain on household finances, with the average Band D council tax bill in Wales having risen by more than £600 over the past five years.
Darren Millar MS, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, believes that the Welsh Government should use its existing powers to introduce a cap on council tax and legislate for referendums if local authorities attempt to breach this limit. He also advocates for an independent review of the local government funding formula to ensure fairer funding for rural areas.
