Williams Eyes Another Rate Hike as Inflation Risks Persist
New York Federal Reserve President John Williams expressed a cautious optimism about the US economy's resilience to higher energy prices, but warned of inflation risks. Speaking at a conference in London, Williams stated that it is 'reasonable' to consider another interest rate hike before the end of the year to help combat rising inflation.
Market participants have been forecasting a strong likelihood of another rate increase, with odds put at high levels for both October and December's policy meetings. The Fed raised rates last week to target inflation pressures that have exceeded its 2% target for years, driven by President Donald Trump's trade tariffs and the Middle East war.
Williams emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the economic outlook, stating 'we really want to see not only inflation get back to 2%, but also we want to see that happen... in a timely manner.' The Fed has revised its expectations for inflation return to target until 2029.
