Williams Suggests Another US Rate Hike Possible Before Year's End
New York Federal Reserve President John Williams stated that it is reasonable to consider another US rate hike by the end of the year to combat inflation risks. Market participants' forecasts suggest investors believe another rate hike is likely before the end of 2026, which aligns with Williams' thinking.
The US central bank raised its policy rate last week to the 3.75%-4.00% range, and 16 out of 18 policymakers signaled at least one more rate hike is needed by the end of 2026. Williams emphasized that high levels of uncertainty cloud the economic outlook, making it challenging for policymakers to balance growth and price risks.
Inflation poses a significant challenge, with the US central bank targeting 2% inflation. However, forecasts indicate inflation will not return to target until 2029. Futures markets are placing strong odds on another rate hike at the October policy meeting and in December.
