Yen Falters Against Dollar Amid Central Bank Rate Hike Uncertainty
The Japanese yen weakened against the dollar on September 22 despite a recent rate hike by the Bank of Japan. The currency's decline is attributed to increased bets that policymakers will struggle to keep pace with other major central banks' monetary tightening, leaving interest rates in Japan far below their global counterparts.
The yen's movement was limited by the Japanese market holiday and concerns over official intervention to support the currency, following a rate check on the dollar against the yen by Japan on Friday. This step often precedes official intervention in the foreign exchange market.
Cryptocurrencies posted gains over the past 24 hours, driving Bitcoin to its highest level in eight months above $87,000. Markets are pricing in an approximately 30 percent probability that the Bank of Japan will raise its short-term interest rate to 1.5 percent in October.
