Yen Jumps as Bank of Japan Rate Hike Bets Fuel Currency Surge
The Japanese yen has surged by approximately 2% against the US dollar over the past week, its strongest weekly performance since July. This unexpected increase in value is largely due to investors rapidly increasing their bets on another Bank of Japan rate hike.
Meanwhile, Mexico's peso and Colombia's peso have also strengthened against the US dollar. The Mexican peso has dropped below 16.90 per dollar, while the Colombian peso has gained around 2.7% in value over the past week.
The strong yen and peso values are largely driven by separate factors. In Japan, investors expect a Bank of Japan rate hike to increase borrowing costs and reduce demand for high-yielding assets. In Mexico and Colombia, high interest rates and improved energy sector expectations have made these currencies more attractive to investors.
