Yen Rebounds, But Trump Concerns and Rate Differentials Still Weigh on Currency
The Japanese yen has made a brief recovery from its two-week lows, but experts say the currency's upside is still limited. The yen's rebound was supported by comments from Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, who stated that Donald Trump had expressed concern over the yen's weakness during a meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi earlier in the week.
Katayama also confirmed that she will continue coordinating with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent following their joint intervention in late July. This was the first such action since 1998, and it has raised concerns about potential future interventions to support the yen's value.
However, despite these efforts, the yen's strengthening is still constrained by the wide US-Japan rate differential and expectations of further Federal Reserve rate hikes. Additionally, uncertainty over the pace of Bank of Japan policy tightening also limits the yen's potential for growth.
