Yen Remains Lone Net Long Holder Amid Currency Market Turmoil
The latest Commitments of Traders report from the CFTC shows that global capital positioning in major futures and options markets diverged significantly for the week ending September 22. In the foreign exchange market, the Japanese yen maintained a net long position of 71,982 contracts, while the euro, British pound, and Swiss franc continued to see net short positioning.
The metals market saw divergence: gold's speculative net long positions decreased by 5,727 contracts to 131,334, indicating weakened enthusiasm for gold. In contrast, copper's speculative net long positions increased by 17,108 contracts to 82,649, reflecting improved expectations for industrial metals.
In the energy market, crude oil's speculative net long positions continued to build, increasing by 8,952 contracts to 148,467. Natural gas shorts were substantially covered, with a decrease of 27,105 contracts to 27,158.
