Yen Slumps Against Dollar Amid Interest Rate Differential
The Japanese yen has continued its decline against major and secondary currencies in Asian trading on Wednesday. The US dollar rose by 0.2% to ¥157.68, pushing the yen toward breaking below its two-week low of ¥158.06. This is the fourth consecutive day that the yen has fallen against the dollar.
The interest rate differential between Japan and the United States currently stands at 275 basis points in favor of US rates. Market expectations suggest this gap will widen to 300 basis points in October, supporting the US dollar's strength.
Investors are awaiting further data on inflation, unemployment, and wages in Japan to reassess their expectations for a Japanese interest rate hike. The Bank of Japan's less hawkish tone after last week's meeting has contributed to the decline in market pricing for a 25-basis-point interest rate hike by the bank in October.
