Yen Soars as Trump Concerns and Intervention Risk Shift Market Dynamics
The Japanese yen has seen its strongest daily gain in over two weeks, reaching an increase of 0.6% to 157.95 per dollar on Friday.
This move comes after Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama's warning kept traders cautious about the possibility of intervention.
Katayama stated that US President Donald Trump directly raised concerns about the weak yen with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during a meeting in New York this week.
This unusual involvement of the White House adds weight to Tokyo's usual verbal warnings, as Katayama also mentioned coordinating with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has signaled support for a stronger yen.
Moh Siong Sim, a strategist at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp, believes that intervention risk should put a ceiling on further JPY weakness and may be nearing a turning point due to Trump's concerns.
