Yen Soars on BOJ Rate Hike Expectations
The Japanese yen is experiencing its strongest week in over a month, having risen by 2.2% as of Friday's trading session.
This significant gain comes despite a slight dip to a low of 156.38 per dollar before recovering some losses to trade at around 155.25 against the greenback.
The yen's surge has been fueled by growing expectations that the Bank of Japan could raise interest rates in the near future, with the central bank set to meet on September 17-18.
Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at National Australia Bank, believes that market participants are becoming increasingly jittery about potential intervention from either Japan or the US Federal Reserve.
JPMorgan also cautions that an unwinding of estimated yen shorts could send the dollar to a 142-146 range against the Japanese currency.
