Yen Soars on Hopes of BOJ Rate Hike
The Japanese yen experienced a significant surge in value against the US dollar on speculation about interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan (BOJ). As of 5 p.m. New York time, the dollar traded at 155.75-85 yen, down 2.89 yen from Wednesday's levels. Traders attributed this move to expectations that the BOJ may soon increase rates in response to economic and price conditions.
BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda has signalled his readiness to raise interest rates, which has contributed to the yen's appreciation. The US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also called for a review of accommodative monetary conditions after the G20 finance ministers' meeting.
The recent currency market intervention by Japan on April 30, where it spent a record 6.28 trillion yen, may have also played a role in the yen's strengthening. Traders noted no signs of government intervention in the current price movement.
