Yen Spikes on Intervention Speculation Amid Dollar Weakness
The yen's value surged against the dollar on speculation of a joint intervention by Japan and the United States. The Japanese currency reached the upper 156 yen range at one point on Friday, marking an increase of over 2 yen.
According to reports, Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae revealed that US President Donald Trump expressed concern about the yen's weakness during their recent summit. Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki also confirmed 'the yen's undervaluation is problematic' after speaking with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent by phone.
Despite these developments, investors are skeptical of the effectiveness of an intervention due to expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates again.
