Yen Spikes on Softer US Inflation, but USD/JPY Exchange Rate Remains Stable
The Japanese Yen (JPY) has seen an increase in value following softer US inflation numbers. The data release led to a decrease in odds of a Federal Reserve hike in October, with markets now giving it near 35% chance. This reduction in the likelihood of a rate hike caused the USD/JPY exchange rate to dip below 156.50 and eventually close at around 157.50.
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is set to make its decision two days after the Fed, with its rate gap currently standing at 2.5 points. Markets have given the BoJ a one-in-three chance of hiking in October, similar to the odds for the Fed. This similarity in odds has caused the USD/JPY exchange rate to remain relatively stable.
The upcoming Tankan survey and Tokyo's Consumer Price Index (CPI) are expected to provide further insights into the Japanese economy. The BoJ's decision will be crucial in determining the value of the Yen, with a strong showing potentially lifting the odds for a BoJ hike to December or sooner.
