Yen Stabilizes Amid Official Warnings of Corrective Actions
The Japanese yen has been hovering in an upper-157 range against the US dollar due to verbal warnings from senior government officials. As of 2:00 p.m. on the 28th, the dollar traded at 157.76-78 yen, a gain of 0.33 yen from the previous Friday's level. The upward pressure on the yen is largely driven by statements from Japanese and US financial authorities expressing concerns about yen weakness.
Finance Minister Katayama reaffirmed Japan and the US' commitment to strengthening cooperation between the two nations after an online meeting with US Treasury Secretary Bessent. Bessent also emphasized that a strong yen is desirable, adding to the market's expectations of corrective actions against yen weakness.
The market has responded positively to these warnings, with yen buying advancing and dollar selling continuing in its wake. Meanwhile, NYMEX crude oil futures have risen, prompting some yen selling and dollar buying as investors expect Japan's trade balance to deteriorate.
