Yen Stands Tall Despite Weaker-than-Expected Q2 GDP
The Japanese Yen has shown unexpected strength despite weaker-than-expected Q2 GDP data. According to preliminary figures, Japan's economy expanded by only 0.3% over the quarter in Q2 2026, falling short of market expectations of 0.5%. The annualized GDP growth rate was 1.1%, compared with forecasts of 2.0% and the previous quarter's 1.8%.
This unexpected resilience in the Yen has provided some comfort to Japanese officials, who are taking a more optimistic view of recent economic developments. Strategists at Scotiabank note that the recent firming in JPY is 'likely providing considerable reassurance' to key officials at the Ministry of Finance.
Meanwhile, the USD/JPY pair has depreciated as the US Dollar edges lower amid weaker-than-expected US economic data. Retail Sales in the United States fell by 0.6% month-over-month in July, coming in below the market consensus of 0.1% growth. Traders have reduced their bets on Federal Reserve rate hikes following a slew of softer US data.
