Yen Surges Amid Hawkish BoJ Hike Expectations
The Japanese Yen has surged against the US Dollar on Thursday, fueled by expectations of a hawkish interest rate hike from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) next week. Markets anticipate that the BoJ will increase interest rates by 25 basis points to 1.25% at its policy meeting on September 17-18, with analysts predicting a 'hawkish' move.
According to DBS, it is 'almost a done deal' that the BoJ will hike rates next week, while Commerzbank notes that an interest rate increase is now priced in at roughly 96% and expects further hikes to follow quickly thereafter. As long as expectations continue to shift in a hawkish direction, the yen should have little trouble appreciating further.
The US Dollar remains under pressure despite strong United States (US) Nonfarm Payrolls data for August, which has lifted hawkish Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate expectations. The odds of the Fed hiking interest rates at its policy meeting next week stand at 61.2% according to the CME FedWatch tool.
