Yen Surges Amidst Hawkish BOJ Comments
The Japanese yen experienced a significant surge against the US dollar on Wednesday, rising to as high as 155.21 per dollar after having retraced approximately half of the gains made following a joint intervention by the US and Japan at the end of July.
The move comes amidst hawkish comments from Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata, who suggested that the central bank should conduct interest rate hikes nimbly to counter intensifying inflationary pressures.
Analysts are divided on whether this is an official intervention or a rate check, with some suggesting that it could be a convenient time for the US or Japan to at least conduct a rate check after the Bank of Japan comments. However, others argue that the magnitude of the move does not suggest direct market intervention.
The yen has struggled to find support due to the wide differential between US and Japanese interest rates, with the yen trading back to 160.39 earlier on Wednesday, the weakest level since the intervention.
