Yen Surges as Falling Yields Weaken US Dollar
The Japanese Yen has strengthened against the US Dollar on Wednesday due to falling Treasury yields in the United States. The decline in long-term US government debt yields has reduced the appeal of Dollar-denominated assets, leading to a broad decline in the Greenback.
The benchmark 10-year yield fell by more than 5 basis points to around 4.64%, while the 30-year yield dropped nearly 10 basis points to around 5.18%. The US Dollar Index (DXY) traded near 98.94, down 0.72% on the day and reaching its lowest level since May 29.
The larger buybacks of longer-dated government debt by the Treasury Department aim to improve liquidity in the long-term government bond market. However, this move has put downward pressure on US yields, which may limit the potential for interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve (Fed) later this year.
