Yen Surges as Hawkish Repricing Sparks Interest Rate Hopes
The Japanese yen has made a sudden jump in value, rising to an intraday peak of 157.95 per dollar in Asia on Thursday.
This move extended its 0.9% gain from the previous session and caught traders off guard, initially sparking concerns about possible intervention by Japanese authorities.
However, experts suggest that the yen's strength is more likely due to a hawkish repricing of domestic rate expectations after Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata made comments on Wednesday about conducting interest rate hikes nimbly to counter intensifying inflationary pressures.
The BOJ rate hike this month is nearly fully priced in by markets, but the market is taking Takata's comments 'more seriously', according to Citi.
