Yen Surges as Oil Prices Soar and Dollar Weakens

The Japanese yen has strengthened significantly in recent days, reaching its strongest level since February. This has kept the dollar on the defensive as traders grapple with rising oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Brent crude futures have surged over 1.48% to $99.37 per barrel after Iranian-backed Houthis launched strikes on several Saudi cities, further entangling a US ally in the conflict.

The reaction in the currency market has been modestly lower for the dollar, with some analysts attributing this weakness to the rapid rise of the yen over the past week.

OCBC strategists noted that the latest escalation keeps Fed policy implications from higher energy prices in focus, particularly after last week's strong US payrolls report revived expectations of another rate hike.
