Yen Surges on Oil Price Spike, Dollar Fades
The Japanese yen surged to seven-month highs on Wednesday, pushing the dollar down in its wake. Oil prices broke above $100 per barrel for the first time since late July, casting a shadow over global markets ahead of US inflation data on Friday.
The move was fueled by expectations of faster Bank of Japan tightening, Japanese investors repatriating overseas funds, and pressure from Washington for a stronger yen. The BOJ is widely expected to raise rates by 25 basis points at its September 17 and 18 meeting, with Governor Kazuo Ueda's comments being closely watched.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday dared traders to bet against the yen, following historic joint US/Japanese intervention in late July. The Canadian dollar shrugged off another sideswipe from the United States in the escalating trade conflict between the two neighboring countries, strengthening modestly on the day.
