Yen Surges to Lower 157 Against Dollar Amid Intervention Speculation
The Japanese yen surged to its strongest level against the US dollar since mid-May on Friday in New York, reaching as low as 157.24 per dollar amid speculation of a currency intervention by authorities.
This brief spike marked the yen's strongest point in over three months, with many market analysts attributing it to possible intervention efforts by Japanese officials to stabilize the currency.
Just a day prior, the yen had surged to the 157 range against the dollar, gaining almost 5 yen from nearly four-decade lows. This sudden move was later confirmed by market and government sources to have resulted from a massive currency intervention by Japanese authorities.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama declined to comment on whether officials had intervened in the markets, but stated that they 'are always acting with vigilance.'
