Yen Trading Surges as Dollar Weakness Continues
Currency trading dynamics have shifted from favoring the US dollar to the Japanese yen. According to BigGo Finance, yen deposits at South Korea's five major commercial banks, KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, Woori, and NH Nonghyup, surged by ¥47.8 billion in just a month, exceeding the August full-month increase of ¥43.8 billion.
This trend is driven by expectations of a price rebound for the yen. The won-yen exchange rate climbed to 930 won per 100 yen in early July before sliding to the 850 won range late last month. The US dollar has been weakening due to its high interest rates, making it less attractive to investors.
Market participants believe that if the Bank of Japan accelerates monetary policy normalization, yen-buying incentives will strengthen further. Analysts suggest that the BOJ may consider additional rate hikes based on inflationary pressures and wage growth momentum, boosting expectations for yen appreciation.
