Yen Under Pressure as BOJ Fails to Provide Clear Guidance
The Japanese yen is under pressure as it extended its decline against the U.S. dollar to around 157.60 on Wednesday, September 23. The Bank of Japan's recent rate hike, which saw a 25-basis-point increase to 1.25%, failed to provide clear hawkish guidance, leaving markets questioning the magnitude of future rate hikes.
The preliminary reading for the U.S. Purchasing Managers' Index is scheduled for release later on Wednesday, and markets remain highly vigilant about the possibility of intervention by Japanese authorities in the foreign-exchange market.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda stated that 'no option is off the table,' but Wells Fargo & Co.'s chief Asia-Pacific strategist noted that Ueda's press conference showed some hawkish hints, but not enough to support the market's aggressive hawkish expectations.'
