$1.9 Billion Loan Revives Iowa Nuclear Plant for Google's AI Data Centers

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has approved a $1.9 billion loan to NextEra Energy, enabling the company to restart its Duane Arnold Energy Center, a 615-megawatt nuclear facility in Iowa.

The plant had been shut down due to damage from a tropical storm in August 2020, but will now be revived to provide power for Google's AI data centers.

According to NextEra, the project will create 'thousands' of direct and indirect jobs, which is welcome news given the growing demand for energy to power data centers.
