$4 Trillion AI Infrastructure Spree: Goldman Sachs Estimates Break-Even Point for Hyperscalers
The world's largest technology companies are investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, with Goldman Sachs estimating that the six major hyperscalers will spend a staggering $4.14 trillion on AI capex from 2028 to 2030.
According to Goldman's research, the current pace of spending is unprecedented, with the firm tracking Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Oracle, and SpaceX as they build out their AI infrastructure.
The break-even point for these investments is estimated to be around $300 billion in annual AI revenue, which would allow the companies to stop losing money on their infrastructure investments. However, Goldman believes that a more ambitious threshold of $1 trillion in annual revenue is needed to generate satisfying returns for both infrastructure providers and application developers.
Goldman's estimates are based on a 15% annualized return on invested capital and suggest that the hyperscalers would need to generate approximately $1.42 trillion in cumulative revenue across the three years from 2028 to 2030.
