$42M Jury Verdict Against CACI Overturned by Federal Appeals Court

A $42 million jury verdict against CACI International has been overturned by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, citing a recent Supreme Court decision.

The verdict was handed down in March and found CACI Premier Technology liable for conspiracy to commit cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment (CIDT) under the Alien Tort Statute.

The case involved three former detainees who were subjected to harsh and degrading treatment at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq between 2003 and 2004.

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Cisco Systems Inc. v. Doe, which ruled that courts cannot create new rights of action to remedy violations of international law under the Alien Torts Statute, was cited as the reason for overturning the verdict.
