As of September 8th, homeowners and building owners in New York City will be required to use official NYC Bins for trash collection or face a $50 fine. The Department of Sanitation announced that this warning period ends on Labor Day, marking the beginning of stricter enforcement.

NYC Bins are rodent-resistant and designed to work with mechanical tippers being added to DSNY's rear-loading trucks, making collection easier and safer for sanitation workers. They can be purchased at all Home Depot stores in the five boroughs, with sizes and colors available for various needs.

Competition led to NYC Bins being significantly cheaper than comparable bins, and eligible homeowners can still get reimbursed for their purchase through September 8th. Owners of one- and two-family homes who received the STAR property tax exemption or credit in 2024 or 2025 are eligible for reimbursement.
